In this Help and Information tutorial, you will see how to install HandBrake on your computer. HandBrake is a free, open-source tool for converting, compressing, and encoding videos.

Important: This tutorial is for students outside of a school. For students within Sask DLC, please install HandBrake from the Application Catalogue. For students in another school division school, please follow your school's procedures for installing programs


Note: This tutorial is for installing HandBrake on a Windows computer


Step 01: Navigate to HandBrake's Download Page

click the button below to navigate to the download page for HandBrake. The download page will open in a new tab.

Step 02: Download the HandBrake Installation File

click Download (64 bit), located under the Windows label, to begin the HandBrake download process.



Step 03: Save the Installation File

A. Depending on how your browser is configured, the file will download in one of two ways: 

  1. The file will automatically download, saving to the Downloads folder on your computer, or
  2. A window will pop-up asking you where you want to save the file.

B. Take note of the file names HandBrake-1.0.7-x86_64-Win_GUI, when you save the file you will need to open this file later

C. Click Save to save the file 


Step 04: Open the Installation File

Click on the file to open it, once the download is complete. You will click on the file from the location you saved it to in Step 03


Step 05: Permit the Installation 

When you open the file, you will be prompted that a program is attempting to change your computer. Click Yes to begin the installation

Note: The image above is from Windows 10. If you are using an older version of Windows, you will see a slightly different alert window; however, you will still need to click Yes to permit the installation


Step 06: Begin the Installation

Once the installation begins, a window will open explaining that you should close all other programs before installing. Close all other programs and click Next to begin the installation process


Step 07: Agree to the License Agreement

On the next screen, you will be presented with a License Agreement for HandBrake. Read the terms of the License Agreement, then click I Agree to continue the installation process. 


Step 08: Choose the Installation Location

A. Choose where HandBrake will be installed. By default this is C:\Program Files\HandBrake and I recommend leaving this, unless you have a reason to change it.

B. Click Install to install HandBrake.


Step 09: Finish the Installation

Click Finish on the final screen to complete the installation of HandBrake
